The illicit trafficking of cultural artifacts remains a significant global challenge, depriving nations of their historical identity and cultural legacy. Armed conflicts, colonial-era plunder, illegal excavations and black-market trade have resulted in the displacement of invaluable heritage objects across borders. The loss of such artifacts not only erodes cultural identity but also fuels organized crime and undermines international law. In this context, UNESCO must deliberate on strengthening international cooperation, enhancing border and customs enforcement, promoting transparent provenance research and facilitating the fair and timely repatriation of stolen cultural property to their countries of origin.
